Career Interest Surveys
The Student Career Interest Survey is a Free service provided by the Exploring program. It is taken annually by students in grades 8-11 and takes about 10 minutes to complete. The survey has been approved by the U.S. Department of Education and meets the standards of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974.
Students Who Take the Survey Will:
Select their top three career interests (click to see the provided list of careers)
Select two hobbies/interests
State their post-graduation plans (i.e. college, military, trade school, other)
Select two areas in which
they need extra resources or counseling (i.e. tutoring or ACT preparation)
How Survey Results are Used:
Each participating school receives a comprehensive report of the results so that counselors can better plan curriculum and counsel students based on their needs. The following information is provided:
A summary of students' career interests and hobbies by grade
A summary of the total number of students interested in each career and hobby
A summary of the school's post-graduation plans
A summary of the school's life guidance needs
A summary of each student's individual needs and interests
The Exploring program uses the information to plan career clubs, or Exploring Posts, based on students' career interests. We can then work with school guidance counselors to match students with community organizations that may be able to help students explore their favorite careers.
Please Note: The survey information is not shared with any outside group. The U.S. Department of Education has reviewed the survey in relationship to the Family Educational Rights Act of 1974 and the Privacy Act of 1974 and encourages schools to participate.
