• Discuss what is meant by the term "primary care" with regard to a medical specialty. Describe the types of work physicians do in family practice, internal medicine, obstetrics, pediatrics, psychiatry, and/or surgery. Discuss the educational requirements for each specialty
• Complete the American Red Cross course 'First Aid--Responding to Emergencies'
• Study careers in dentistry, neurology, pathology and geriatrics.
• Research diseases of animals that can be transmitted to humans
• Visit a veterinary clinic or hospital. Watch a medical procedure performed on an animal.
• Prepare a first aid kit for the home. Youth should discuss its contents with their family
• Discuss the Hippocratic oath and compare the original version to a more modern one.
• Organize a blood drive or volunteer at a health-related community service event.
• Discuss how ultra-sounds work and practice giving an ultra sound to another post member.
• Visit a cadaver.
• Learn about a minor surgery and watch a live one take place.
• Have an X-ray technician make a presentation. View X-rays of broken bones, scoliosis patients, etc.
• Practice sutures on a pig's foot.
• Discuss the typical duties of nurses
• Discuss emergency medicine and how popular television shows, such as E.R. and Grey's Anatomy, dramatize what goes on in a hospital.
• Examine the importance of anesthesiologists and their roles
• Discuss different psychological disorders. Study signs of depression and suicide, bi-polar disorder and borderline personality disorder. Have each youth research a different disorder and make a presentation to the post.
